Visiting my friends running the SCCA Champ Tour event in Charlotte. Couldn’t partake myself this year due to work (and limited talent).

Lol!

Yep. Traps heat to keep the tires warm

Yup, tire warmer with wood block to hold in place. It's windy out here.

Highly modified front wheel drive competing well with RWD cars in the same class.

Is that a MkI Jetta way back there? Red?

Grid position next to The Sledgehammer.

That picture takes me back to my autocross roots . I won a national tour event once. Then I got hooked on playing racecar for real ... which turns out to be cheaper than nationally competitive autocrossing.

Short answer is: no.
If you are referring to the red car all the way on the right, that's a Malibu.

CAM is such a fun class.

There is a guy here running a GT3 RS. Respect, but that’s pricey.
Yes, everyone I know who is nationally competitive is spending a lot of money. SSC helps limit that a bit, but not much.

This one here, I couldn’t quite place it (actual size, hopefully Kinja doesn’t blur it).

Of course I guess it depends on how seriously you play racecar for real, and whether you wreck.
![]() 03/22/2019 at 15:59 |

Yep, 80s Malibu.

This thing is a monster, too.

Going to get weighed.

Totally makes sense now, I forgot those even existed :D
My brain saw this pillar/trunk, which isn’t too far off (pic probably Kinja’d) :

yes it is, but I have a question... Are they checking those CAM cars to make sure they’re street legal? Lights, registration, insurance? We have a guy running CAM locally who was telling me he didn’t think it was a big deal that he had let all of that stuff expire and had removed his front signal lights...
![]() 03/22/2019 at 18:53 |

I don’t know. I guess they’d have to ask for current registration at weigh in or tech . I don’t think that’s happening.

Very true. You can spend tons of money playing racecar for real (even just spec miata), but it turns out that how fast you’re going around the racetrack isn’t really related to how much fun you’re having. It is, however, directly related to how much money you’re spending to do it. Bang for the buck, 5-10k will buy a good IT car that is an order of magnitude more fun than autocross to play with, but of course the car itself is a consumable. You can’t be emotionally involved with a racecar. It isn’t a matter of if you wreck, it is a question of how often and how hard.

Hmm. Then what’s the point of specifically putting it in the rules i wonder...

Well, if someone is competitive and not being street legal seems to be giving an advantage, one can always protest and then it will be checked, I guess.
